Gigi Buffon is the best goalkeeper of the 21st century. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has handed this particular accolade to the Bianconeri shot-stopper following a vote conducted by specialists from around the world.

The table sees Buffon occupy top spot on 199 points, two ahead of nearest rival Iker Casillas. Chelsea’s Petr Cech sits in third position.

The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the 21st Century(IFFHS)

Establishing The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the 21st Century can only be done on the basis of the annual world vote (by the IFFHS). Each year many different jurors (countries) have taken part in the vote and, in the early years the jurors voted for the top three places (3 points to 1 point), and only later for the top four places (4 points to 1 point). So it would not be possible to simply add the points awarded in the annual votes.

The IFFHS has devised an equitable method for determining The World‘s best Goalkeeper of the 21st Century. From the annual ranking of the goalkeepers (as a result of the world vote) the IFFHS will take into consideration the "Top 20" for each year and allocate points to each place. So the first-placed receives 20 points, the second-placed 19 points, the third-placed 18 points ... and a point for twentieth place. If the annual world ranking comprises more than 20 goalkeepers, then the goalkeepers from 21st place onwards receive no points. If the annual world ranking comprises fewer than 20 goalkeepers (based on the fixed rules), no points will be awarded for the unoccupied palces.
From the addition of the points received in the single years produces the world ranking list of the 21st century, which widens of a year every year in January. Each first-placed goalkeeper of this world ranking list is the leading World’s best Referee of the 21st Century to date.

Gianluigi Buffon ahead of Iker Casillas by a hair

After 11 years, Italian "Gigi" Buffon leads the ranking list with only two points ahead of Spaniard Iker Casillas and is therefore the leading World’s best Goalkeeper of the 21st Century - up to now. Both of them have been World’s best Goalkeeper of the Year four times. Should the Spaniard rank three places ahead of "Gigi" Buffon in the "Top 20" in the 2012 world election, he would take the lead in this world ranking list. With the still active Czech Petr Čech and Oliver Kahn (3x), further former World’s best Goalkeeper follow in the "Top 5", but a considerable part of the career of the German goalkeeper took place already in the 20th century.

South America‘s leading goalkeeper of the 21st century is at the moment »Dida«, ahead of his Brazilian countryman Júlio César. However, should the goalkeeper of FC Internazionale Milano place among the "Top 6" in the 2012 world election, he would become South America’s new no.1 in the 21st century. Among the "Top 10" there are six goalkeepers who never became World’s best Goalkeeper of the Year, but provided world-class performances over more than a decade.

Buffon in no rush over new deal(ESPN Soccer)

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is in no hurry to sign a new deal at the club.

Reports in Turin claimed that Buffon, 34, who is under contract with the Bianconeri until June 2013, would soon start negotiations with Juve regarding a possible contract extension.

However, Buffon told Gazzetta dello Sport: "We are not talking about a renewal right now. The most important thing is concentrating fully on what is happening on the pitch. The rest can sort itself out after without any kinds of problems whatsoever.''

The Italy international has enjoyed a stellar career in Turin since joining the club from Parma in 2001 and this season has proved pivotal in helping Juventus remain unbeaten this season.

The Turin giants lead the Serie A standings and have the best defensive line in the competition with just 13 goals given away in 21 games.

"Buffon, Gattuso e Cannavaro sono proprio malati": in una intercettazione ambientale dello scorso ottobre l'ex preparatore dei portieri del Ravenna definisce scommettitori accaniti i tre azzurri. Mancano riscontri. E sostiene che l'Atalanta "sapeva i casini che stavamo facendo". Il 7 luglio Stefano Bettarini si confida con la "talpa" della Lega calcio: "I magistrati? Li ho spiazzati"

Mentre la Procura di Cremona va avanti con gli interrogatori, spunta l'intercettazione telefonica che coinvolge Stefano Bettarini, ex calciatore ed ex marito di Simona Ventura, coinvolto nell'inchiesta che ha travolto in estate il calcio italiano. L'intercettazione che pubblichiamo è del giorno stesso in cui Bettarini fu sentito dalla Giustizia sportiva. Quel giorno Bettarini ha chiamato la dipendente della Lega calcio dalla quale, secondo le indagini, raccoglievano informazioni sulle inchieste i calciatori e le ha detto: "Li ho spiazzati", parlando dei magistrati, ammettendo di scommettere ogni tanto e ammettendo di essere stato tesserato dal Chievo "per pubblicità".

INTERCETTAZIONE DEL 7 LUGLIO — Bettarini: "... sono andato, dall'avvocato di quello ... di giù, che è messo malissimo, e hai già capito no?"

BETTARINI: "RUOLO MARGINALE" — In serata poi Bettarini ha commentato all'Ansa l'intercettazione e il suo coinvolgimento: "Ancora una volta vengo sbattuto in prima pagina per una vicenda nella quale ho avuto un ruolo assolutamente marginale. Ho subito ammesso sia alla stampa sia in tv a Matrix di essere uno scommettitore e l'ho confermato mesi dopo ai Procuratori Federali quando mi hanno interrogato. Al processo sportivo ho patteggiato la pena subendo una squalifica perchè pur non giocando e non frequentando uno spogliatoio da oltre cinque anni, risultavo ancora tesserato per una società di calcio per soli motivi di immagine. Ora si scopre che parlavo con una segretaria della Lega Calcio della mia vicenda sportiva commentando, come si fa con una buona amica, quello che mi stava accadendo e si afferma che avrei addirittura spiazzato i Procuratori Federali con ammissioni che, invece, avevo già reso pubbliche immediatamente dopo aver appreso dalla stampa e sottolineo solo dalla stampa, di essere indagato a Cremona. Il testo della intercettazione con la signora è chiaro ma, ciò nonostante, il tono allusivo dato da chi commenta la notizia, vuole come sempre, farmi sembrare più coinvolto di quanto lo sia davvero, nei reati all'esame dei Giudici di Cremona. La realtà è e sarà sempre quella che ho confessato dal primo giorno e cioè che scommettevo naturalmente sperando di azzeccare le scommesse senza neppure troppo fidarmi dei mille millantatori che bazzicano quell'ambiente".

SANTONI: "L'ATALANTA SAPEVA" — Altri sviluppi dell'inchiesta potranno arrivare domani dall'interrogatorio di Nicola Santoni, ex preparatore dei portieri del Ravenna e amico di Cristiano Doni. La Squadra Mobile della Questura di Bologna il 13 ottobre 2001 realizzò una intercettazione ambientale all'interno dell'auto di Santoni, che parlava con una persona chiamata Maurinho (si tratterebbe di Maurilio Ernandes). Nell'occasione Santoni parla di Cristiano Doni e della sua strategia difensiva, tirando in ballo l'Atalanta.

Santoni: "No, sì, però, se gli dan sei mesi, dai, esce in un modo diverso..."
Maurinho: "Esce in un modo diverso"
Santoni: "Un anno fai il direttore sport.. cioé..."
M: "vero, certo.. è diverso, è è completamente diverso"
Santoni: "Sì, no.. può stare nella società. non penso che... cioé, per tutti insieme, tutti i casini che abbiamo fatto.. perché tanto alla fine di casini ne abbiamo fatti tanti, dentro ci sono anche loro. capito?... Quindi è inutile che lo abbandonino, perché..."
M: "Perché non possono! - incomprensibile - di casini, ragazzi, c'è c'è.. ehe! non è che adesso questi qua non sanno niente, all'oscuro (...): 'No, no, cane, oh, cane cos'è successo. Non me l'aspettavo"
Santoni: "Sì, magari qualcuno ha detto così.... perché non sapeva niente, ma... c'era chi sapeva".

SANTONI E I TRE AZZURRI SCOMMETTITORI — Sempre nello stesso dialogo i due nominano Gigi Buffon, Rino Gattuso e Fabio Cannavaro, sostenendo che siano scommettitori incalliti. Santoni aggiunge: "sono proprio malati". Si tratta comunque dei discorsi fra due scommettitori (di cui uno indagato), senza il riscontro di alcuna prova. Queste le frasi di Santoni, che parte parlando del "clan dei bolognesi":

Santoni: "Le cose grosse erano questi qua... che facevan girare sti soldi, sti qua di Bologna avevano assegni da cinque, seicentomila euro...lì erano veramente organizzati (...)

Santoni: "Gioca 100-200mila euro al mese!...no...eeh: lui, Gattuso...Cannavaro...sono proprio malati!... Solo che non si poteva.. ugualmente... e (incomprensibile) non gli ha contestato nessuna. Si son fatti il loro mondiale, poi l'han vinto, quindi quello...".

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has dismissed talk of his side winning the Scudetto as "crazy", stating that it is much too early to label them as Serie A champions-elect.

The Turin outfit are currently two points ahead of AC Milan and Udinese at the summit of the Italian top flight and are unbeaten after 13 games.

With a tricky fixture to come against an unpredictable Roma side at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday night, the 33-year-old feels that speaking about where his team will end up at the culmination of the season is pointless.

“We need a great deal of calm here,” the Carrara-born keeper told Tuttosport.

“There are too many games to go, including the entire second half of the season.

“The road is too long and I really don’t want to take our fans for a ride. If I said that 'S-word', then I’d be crazy. I’m not just refusing to say it out of false modesty."

Buffon was also quick to remind fans of last season, when Juventus enjoyed a strong start to the campaign but fell away to end up finishing seventh.

“Don’t forget, in December last year we were in second place, then bad luck ran us down. So many injuries, at least six simultaneously, saw our season precipitate," the Italy international warned.

“After all, if we were to lose one or two important players, then we’d have to see if the team could make do without them.

“In those difficult moments, if they come, we can tell how good this squad really is," he concluded.

With three matches remaining, Juventus are six points behind fourth-placed Udinese and Delneri wants to be judged at the end of the campaign.

He said when asked about his chances of staying at Juventus: "100 per cent.

"For judgement on this season, it is neccesary to wait until 22nd May (when the season ends).


"In the last period, we have found good balance. Something is still missing, but the team are doing what they can."

At the same time, star goalkeeper Buffon is being linked with a move to Serie A rivals Roma.
But his agent, Silvano Martina, told romagiallorossa.it: "I repeat once again that there is no negotiation to take Buffon to Roma and I've never spoken about the possibility."

He added: "Buffon is a Juventus player and intends to stay at Juventus. There is no crack in the relationship between Juventus and Buffon and the club has never talked about the possibility of a sale."

Juventus are expected to make changes to their squad in the summer and it has been reported that they want to sign AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who will become a free agent in June.

But Pirlo's agent, Tullio Tinti, told Gazzetta dello Sport: "I have not spoken about Pirlo with either Juventus or other clubs.

"Soon we will meet Milan then we will evaluate the situation."

Buffon’s future has come under plenty of speculation with his place in the first team under threat from Marco Storari.

Roma and Manchester City are said to be interested in the services of the 33-year-old and there are reports in the Italian media that Juve could sell the Italy international.

However, former Juve coach Lippi, who led the Italian national team to World Cup triumph in 2006, believes that Juventus must not part company with Buffon.

The first arrival is likely to be Lyon's Michel Bastos, who would operate on the opposite flank to the impressive Milos Krasic to form a dynamic partnership.

The Old Lady are also being heavily linked with the Udinese's Chilean star Alexis Sanchez, Villarreal top scorer Giuseppe Rossi, Santos starlet Neymar and Jeremy Menez who has established himself as one of the most sought-after wingers in European football.

Sampdoria's Andrea Poli is also being touted as a future Juventus player, although any transfer will surely be dependant on the departure of either 'keeper Buffon or star centre-half Chiellini.

If Buffon is sold it appears Arsenal and Roma would be favourites to land the experienced Italian number one, although Manchester United and Manchester City are thought to have also expressed an interest in the 33-year-old.

Interest in Chiellini is also fierce, although Manchester United are believed to be in pole position for the no nonsense defender.

However, the Red Devils will only come in for Chiellini if Real Madrid makes an official approach for Nemanja Vidic, with the Premier League Champions wanting a capable replacement for the Serbian.

La Vecchia Signora have been in disappointing form this season and currently lie seventh in the league table. Current head coach Luigi Del Neri is being blamed for the club's poor results, and could very well be on his way out of Juventus at the end of the season.

Therefore, Juventus are in the market for a new boss and they supposedly consider the 33-year-old to be a suitable replacement.

Villas Boas has been in charge of Porto since the start of the season and has guided the Dragoes to top spot in the Portuguese league, with 59 points from 21 games, while guiding them to qualification for the Europa League round of 16.

This morning Milos Krasic and Nicola Legrottaglie underwent at Fornaca Clinic in Sessant instrumental tests to evaluate their respective injuries. The tests showed for Krasic a first instance lesion at his left thigh adductor muscle. The prognosis is of 25 days. Nicola Legrottaglie, during the last minutes of the match vs. Salzburg, suffered a first/second instance lesion at his right femoral biceps. For the defender the prognosis is of 40 days.

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has explained missing the club's team photo.

Speculation over the goalkeeper’s future and a potential January move to Manchester United intensified after he failed to attend the team’s official photo session on Friday.

“I was not with the squad simply because I had to undergo a very important physiotherapy session for my recovery process,” insisted Buffon.

“Yesterday we tested out the efficiency of the leg after the operation and I had some very positive signs.

“In the evening I then had to be in Switzerland to pick up an award as best goalkeeper in the world. I had promised I’d be there, so I couldn’t back out.”

But agent Silvana Martino insists: "Gigi is one of the most decent people that we have - and not just in football. Buffon is recovering from a serious accident, is working 5-6 hours a day, everything is going well, and decided to focus only on this, and follow Juventus at home.

Italy's first choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has set a personal target of January 2011 for his return to action, says theworldgame. The Juventus keeper injured himself in the Azzurri's opening game of the World Cup in South Africa.

Buffon was substituted during the game with Paraguay after suffering a herniated disk and has been replaced by Bologna's Emiliano Viviano under the new national regime of Cesare Prandelli.

When Buffon does return to the national set-up, it is believed that he will take the captain's armband after Fabio Cannavaro's international retirement.

Buffon has been caught in a speculation frenzy in recent days suggesting he may not be wearing the Old Lady's shirt when he finally returns to action, but the 32-year-old has assured fans he will remain in Turin.
