Recent Juventus signing Arturo Vidal and Atalanta midfielder Carlos Carmona were removed from the Chilean national squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
The players were suspended for arriving 45 minutes after their curfew time of 10 p.m. Three other players, Jorge Valdivia, Jean Beausejour and Gonzalo Jara, were also suspended from the squad.
Chile national coach Claudio Borghi told the Santiago Times that the players were "not in a suitable condition" when they arrived. "If you ask me whether they were drunk, I haven't got a clue, but they were not in a reasonable state." Borghi also stated that he found out they were drunk by following the players back to their rooms, something he normally does not do.
"I never go into their rooms, but yesterday I did and what I saw made a very bad impression on me."
This is not the first time Chilean players have misbehaved but it is a first for the Serie A stars. A similar incident occurred in 2007 and Valdivia was one of the members of the team who was involved.
According to Radio Cooperativa, Jara, Valdivia, Beausejour and Carmona are scheduled to give a press conference to explain their actions on Thursday. Vidal is reported to have returned to Turin.
