European and German football is in mourning following the death on Tuesday of Robert Enke, the Hannover 96 and German national-team goalkeeper.

DFB statement
A statement on the German Football Association (DFB) website said: "The German national team received the news of the death of Robert Enke Tuesday night. The team mourns for their former goalkeeper (...).

Team informed
"The team was informed by coach Joachim Löw and team manager Oliver Bierhoff in their hotel in Bonn. Bierhoff said: 'We are in a state of shock. It is beyond words.'

Prayers for wife and family
"DFB President Dr Theo Zwanziger: 'We are stunned by the death of Robert Enke. Our prayers go out to his wife and his family.'"

Deepest sympathy
In a letter to Dr Zwanziger, UEFA President Michel Platini said: "It is with great consternation that I have learned of the death of Robert Enke, and it is my wish to convey my deepest sympathy to his family, the DFB and his club Hannover 96.

Filled with sadness
"In such a moment, one is simply unable to find the appropriate words. One is stunned and filled with sadness. My thoughts are with his family and team colleagues, and I wish them great strength for the time to come." The DFB also confirmed on its website that Saturday's friendly international against Chile in Cologne has been cancelled.

DFB calls off Chile game(Deutscher Fussball-Bund)

Following the tragic death of German goalkeeper Robert Enke, the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) calls off the game against Chile in Cologne on Saturday. Fans having bought and purchased tickets will be reimbursed. Detailed information on the proceedure will be published on this webpage.

The decision was made in a meeting this Wednesday in Bonn, with DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger, General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach, the team’s coach Joachim Löw and the team-manager Oliver Bierhoff participating. The team had also voted for a cancellation of the game against Chile.

“We could not play the game against Chile on Saturday, that was a unanimous decision”, said Dr. Zwanziger, who added that the decision “was without an alternative.” Enke died on Tuesday at the age of 32.

The cancellation leaves Germany with just two games ahead of the nomination of the World Cup roster – next week’s game in Gelsenkirchen against the Ivory Coast (Wednesday, November 18, 8.45 P.M., live on ARD) and the classic football confrontation with Argentinia on March 3rd in Munich.

エンケはバルセロナでのポジション争いに破れて以降、鬱病を患っていたといい、いったんは回復したものの、愛娘の死によってぶり返したという。カウンセリングには通っていたものの、結果的には最悪のかたちでみずから命を絶つということになってしまった。

鬱病は心の風邪というくらいで、誰でもかかる可能性があり、そして風邪は万病のもとという通り、鬱病もひどくなると本当に辛い。この辛さはかかってみないとわからないほどだ。

エンケも気持ちが不安定で上がったときと下がったときの差がひどく堪えたのではないだろうか。

改めて哀悼の意を示したい。

Germany keeper Enke dies in apparent suicide(Reuters)

BERLIN, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Germany and Hanover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke has died after being hit by a train in an apparent suicide, local police said on Tuesday.

"First indications point to suicide," a media officer for the Lower Saxony police told Reuters before adding that Enke's body was found at a train crossing in Neustadt am Ruebenberge some 25-km northeast of Hanover.

The national soccer federation (DFB) said in a statement: "The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock. National team coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff said 'we are all shocked, we are speechless'."

DFB president Theo Zwanziger said the federation was in mourning. "Our feelings go out to his wife and family," he said.

Softly-spoken and reserved, the 32-year-old keeper won eight international caps and was in the running to play at the World Cup in South Africa next year.

Enke, who had spells with clubs in Spain, Turkey and Portugal before signing for Bundesliga team Hanover in 2004, experienced a difficult time in recent months as he battled to secure his place in Germany's team.

STOMACH VIRUS

He missed the last three World Cup qualifiers with what turned out to be an energy-sapping stomach virus and had just returned to action after almost two months out.

"This is a tragedy," Hanover president Martin Kind told reporters.

Despite not being called up for two friendlies against Chile and Ivory Coast this month, even after Bayer Leverkusen's Rene Adler pulled out with an eye infection, Loew had hinted Enke was still front-runner for the starting spot.

Enke, born in Jena in the former East Germany, also played club football for Borussia Moenchengladbach and Benfica and had a brief spell at Barcelona before stints with Fenerbahce and Tenerife.

His two-year-old daughter died of a heart ailment in 2006. The couple adopted a two-month-old girl in May.

"Germany loses an exceptional athlete and a sensitive man who was a role model for many," said Lower Saxony governor Christian Wulff.

It is not yet clear whether Germany's friendly against Chile on Saturday will still go ahead.

ドイツ代表監督のレーブはＷ杯南アフリカ大会に向けて２３人枠、ＧＫ３人を選ぶのにも悩むほど人材豊富となっており、レーブはチリ戦、コートジボワール戦には病気のため招集されなかったものの、本戦に向けて構想に入っていることはほのめかしていた。

２歳の愛娘を心臓疾患で亡くし、５月には２カ月の娘を養女として引き取っていたエンケ。残された家族のことが心配でもある。力強く生きて、夫であり、父親であるエンケのことを決して弱い人間だったとは思わないでほしい。
